How to Measure Chain-Link Fence for School Banners
By Jordan Hale, Editor, School Signs FastShare
Measure each fence bay post to post before artwork starts. Record clear width and height, posts, gates, latches and rails, then choose the largest stock size that fits inside the bay with a small margin for ties.
For athletic directors, facilities crews, and booster clubs.

Order this first (after you measure)
- Open athletic fence → Mesh fence banners
- Gate faces, walls, protected runs → solid vinyl banners when the location and attachment system are appropriate
- Not sure of the size? → What Size Banner Do I Need?
What you need
- Tape measure (100 ft helps on long outfield runs)
- Notepad or phone notes
- Phone camera for one labeled photo per panel
- Optional chalk or tape to mark edges
- One helper on long runs
Don't estimate from the bleachers. Walk the fence.
Step 1: Measure post to post (the real panel)
Chain-link panels live between posts — or between a post and a tension bar at a gate or terminal. For each banner spot:
- Find the left post (or tension bar) where the banner starts
- Find the right post where it ends
- Measure the inside clear width between them
- Write it in feet and inches
That inside width is your starting horizontal size — not "looks about 10 feet."
Step 2: Convert Clear-Bay Measurements Into a Banner Size
Leave a small margin for ties and any clearance facilities requires around gates or moving parts.
- Record the clear bay.
- Mark areas that cannot be covered or used for attachment.
- Confirm the planned finishing/attachment method.
- Choose a finished banner size that fits inside the approved area without interfering with gates, latches, rails or ground clearance.
- Use a stock size only when it genuinely fits; otherwise confirm custom-size availability.
Step 3: Measure height (and leave clearance)
- Top attachment line (top rail, or the height you'll hang to)
- Bottom attachment line (bottom rail or intended bottom edge)
- Leave a few inches off dirt or turf when you can, so mud and mowers don't chew the hem
Write the finished height as the face you want readable — not the full fence-fabric height if you're only covering a band.
Step 4: Match to a stock size
Mesh and vinyl banners come in seven stock sizes: 3' × 6', 3' × 8', 4' × 8', 5' × 10', 5' × 12', 5' × 15', and 5' × 20'. Custom sizes: email sales@schoolsignsfast.com.
Worked example: a panel measures 10' 2" inside. Take off a small tension margin and you're at 10'. A 5' × 10' fits if the fence is tall enough; on a shorter fence, step down to 4' × 8' and center it.
Rules of thumb
- Never round up past the inside width — round down
- On a short fence, height decides first
- Keep one or two widths across a row, even if some panels could fit bigger
Gates, openings, and dugouts
Mark what must stay clear: gate swing arcs, player tunnels and dugout openings, emergency access, scoreboard sightlines. Measure the panel beside a gate as its own piece — never order one long banner that blocks a latch. Dugout specifics: Dugout banners.
Long runs across several panels
5' × 15' and 5' × 20' banners span more than one panel on many fences. That works if the banner lies flat over the middle posts and facilities approves. Measure between the two end posts, note every post and brace in between, and plan ties at each post so it doesn't bow.
What if a panel is wider than one banner? Use two matching banners on neighboring panels instead of stretching one across a post.
Gates and walls for vinyl
- Gates: measure the flat face of the gate frame, not the opening; check the latch and swing
- Walls: measure usable flat area; note outlets, windows, signs, lights
- Sheltered fence runs: measure like any panel, but confirm it's truly out of the wind before choosing vinyl
Mesh or vinyl after you measure
| Spot | Prefer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Open athletic fence / outfield | Mesh | Airflow; less wind load |
| Gate faces, sheltered runs | Solid vinyl | Dense graphics; more wind load |
Measuring does not establish structural capacity. A solid banner generally presents more continuous area to wind than an open mesh face, but mesh still transfers wind load into the attachments and fence. Facilities/fence professionals should address structural limits for exposed, aging, temporary or heavily screened fence. Material depth: School Fence Banners guide · Windscreen vs fence banner.
Measuring day plan
Measure once, on one day, with one record sheet. Two people — one on the tape, one writing. Do it before artwork starts.
| Panel ID | Inside width | Usable height | Bottom clearance | Openings | Mesh/vinyl | Stock size |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FB-01 | 10' 2" | 5' 6" | 4" | none | mesh | 5' × 10' |
Name each photo to match the panel ID. Hand the sheet to whoever builds the artwork. Sponsor rows can reuse the IDs: Sponsor packages.
Common measuring mistakes
- Measuring the whole fence run instead of post-to-post panels
- Ignoring gates and tension bars
- Ordering height to the dirt with zero clearance
- Using a bleacher photo instead of a tape
- Mixing random widths so the fence looks patched
- Choosing vinyl for an open outfield because the proof looked sharper on screen
Fence measure checklist
- Tape and helper ready
- Inside post-to-post width recorded
- Height and bottom clearance decided
- Gates and openings marked
- Photo per panel, named by ID
- Mesh vs vinyl chosen per spot
- Sizes standardized across the row
- Hang plan ready before delivery → Upload artwork
Frequently asked questions
How do you measure a chain-link fence for a school banner?
Measure inside post to post (or post to tension bar), set height with bottom clearance, mark gates, then pick mesh for open fence or vinyl for sheltered faces.
Should banner width equal the full panel?
No. Start from inside clear width, leave a small tension margin, and round down to a stock size.
How much bottom clearance should we leave?
A few inches off dirt or turf when you can. Follow facilities' preference.
What banner sizes can we order?
3' × 6', 3' × 8', 4' × 8', 5' × 10', 5' × 12', 5' × 15', and 5' × 20', plus custom sizes by email.
How fast can we get banners after measuring?
Free Shipping on All Orders. Production begins after print-ready artwork approval. Confirm the delivery estimate when an event deadline matters.
