School Windscreen vs Fence Banner: Which Does Your Fence Need?
By Jordan Hale, Editor, School Signs FastShare
A guide for athletic directors, facilities leads, and booster clubs deciding what goes on the fence.
Every spring someone asks for "windscreen." They might mean a continuous screen along the outfield, a row of sponsor panels, or one big "Home of the Eagles" banner. Those are different jobs with different install plans.
Short version: continuous windscreen is a fence project, and we don't sell it. Fence banners are inventory you can swap, and we print them in mesh and vinyl. You may need both.
See our mesh and vinyl fence banners at Game day fence banners.

Two different jobs
Continuous windscreen runs the full length of a fence section, usually one color, sometimes with a logo. Its job is the backdrop: blocking view through the fence, softening wind on a court or field, giving batters or players a clean background. It is usually installed once and left up. Because it covers long runs, it is usually a facilities or fence-contractor project.
Fence banners are individual printed panels with grommets, sized to a section of fence. Their job is the message: sponsors, spirit, team identity, rivalry week, playoffs, Senior Night. They go up and come down. They change by season, by sport, and by sponsor.
School Signs Fast prints fence banners: Mesh fence banners for open fence and School vinyl banners for sheltered spots. We don't sell or install continuous windscreen rolls. If your job is a full-length screen, get a quote from your facilities team or a fence contractor. If your job is the message, keep reading.
The decision matrix
Answer these five questions and the answer usually sorts itself out.
| Question | Points to windscreen | Points to fence banners |
|---|---|---|
| What is the main job? | Backdrop, privacy, cutting wind across a court or field | Sponsor names, spirit, identity, event messages |
| How often will it change? | Rarely; installed for years | Every season or sponsor cycle |
| How much fence? | Whole runs, end to end | Selected sections |
| Who installs? | Facilities or a fence contractor | Coaches, boosters, facilities crew with ties or bungees |
| Who owns it? | Usually a facilities project | Usually a booster or program order |
If most answers land in the right column, you want fence banners. If they land in the left column, you want windscreen, which is a fence project for facilities, not something we print. If you split, you probably want a combo fence.
When fence banners are the right fit
Sponsors that renew. A sponsor row is inventory: slots that sell, renew, and swap. Individual panels let the booster club replace one sponsor without touching the rest. Plan the program with the School Sponsor Banners guide and the School sponsor banners page.
Messages with a season. Playoff runs, rivalry week, Senior Night, and "Welcome Back" all have an end date. A screen is permanent. A banner comes down Monday.
Multi-sport fences. A stadium fence may serve football in fall, soccer in spring, and track all year. Swappable banners let each program own the fence for its season.
Growing in stages. Boosters can add three panels this year and six next year.
When windscreen is the right fit
Be honest with yourself here. If the problem is the fence itself, banners won't fix it.
- Tennis players want a solid backdrop on every side of the court
- The outfield needs a uniform backdrop the full length of the fence
- A practice field faces a busy road and the school wants to block the view
- Facilities wants one clean, permanent look with nothing to swap
Talk to your facilities team or a fence contractor about a continuous screen and wind load on that fence. Then come back for the messages.
The combo fence
Most athletic complexes end up here: a base layer that stays, a message layer that changes.
- Base layer: plain fence, or a continuous screen from your fence contractor, on the long runs
- Identity layer: one or two wide "Home of" or team-name banners in fixed spots
- Sponsor layer: a row of matching panels in one locked size
- Event layer: seasonal spirit, playoff, and Senior Night panels that rotate
Hang message panels on fence sections that stay open, or ask your facilities team or screen installer whether the fence and screen can carry more. Stacking a banner on a screen adds load to the same fence.

Mesh or vinyl for the message layer
Short answer: mesh for open fence, vinyl for sheltered spots.
Mesh fence banners let air pass through, so the banner and the fence take less wind. Mesh is the default for outfields, stadium perimeters, tennis courts, and track fences. School vinyl banners (13 oz) give a continuous print surface for photo-heavy art on sheltered faces like a press box or gate wall.
Don't cut wind slits in solid vinyl. Order mesh instead.
Sizes and materials by fence job
| Fence job | Product | Starting sizes | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sponsor row | Mesh fence banners | 3' × 6', 3' × 8', or 4' × 8' | Lock one size so the row matches |
| "Home of" / team identity | Mesh fence banners | 5' × 10' up to 5' × 20' | Few words, big logo |
| Seasonal spirit or playoff | Mesh fence banners | 3' × 6' or 3' × 8' | Swap by season |
| Sheltered gate, press box, walkway | School vinyl banners (13 oz) | 3' × 6', 4' × 8' | Photos and dense art |
| Lot approach and gate | School feather flags | See product page | Height and presence |
| Full-run backdrop | Continuous windscreen | Fence project | Not something we print; quote with facilities |
Measure the opening you want covered, then order that size. Leave room for grommets and ties. Choosing across the whole campus? See What Size Banner Do I Need for My School?
School scenarios
Varsity baseball outfield. The program wanted "windscreen" and a sponsor wall. The school kept its existing plain fence, added a 5' × 20' "Home of the Hawks" panel in center, and sold a row of matching 4' × 8' mesh sponsor panels down the lines. When a sponsor rotates out, one panel comes down. Baseball ideas are in Baseball and Softball Banners.
Tennis courts on a windy hill. The coach wanted a solid backdrop on all four sides. That's a windscreen job, so it went to facilities as a fence project. The boosters added two mesh team banners at the entry gate.
Shared stadium. Football, soccer, and track share one fence. Each program owns a set of mesh panels in the same sizes. The fall set comes down after the last home game, and the spring set goes up.
Middle school practice field by a road. The view-blocking screen went to facilities. One vinyl welcome banner went on the sheltered gate face.

Hang, store, reuse
Use every grommet. Keep panels snug, not over-tight. Take them down before severe weather. Follow the full playbook in How to Hang School Fence Banners.
Label and store panels at season's end so the same sponsor and spirit sets go back up next year. See How to Clean and Store School Banners.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between windscreen and a fence banner?
Windscreen is a continuous screen along a full fence run, mostly used as a backdrop and usually installed once. A fence banner is an individual printed panel with grommets, sized to a section of fence and swapped by season or sponsor.
Does School Signs Fast sell windscreen?
No. We print mesh fence banners and school vinyl banners for the message layer. For a full-length screen, get a quote from your facilities team or a fence contractor.
Can we hang banners on top of existing windscreen?
Ask your facilities team or screen installer first. A banner adds load to the same fence. Or hang message panels on open fence sections instead.
Mesh or vinyl for athletic fences?
Mesh fence banners for open, windy fence. School vinyl banners (13 oz) for sheltered faces like gates, press boxes, and covered walkways.
What size should sponsor panels be?
Pick one size, commonly 3' × 8' or 4' × 8', and use it for the whole row so it looks planned.
Can a big team banner replace windscreen?
It can carry the message, not the backdrop. If you need the full run covered, that's a fence project. A wide 5' × 20' mesh panel works well as the identity piece on top of either.
