Baseball and Softball Dugout Banners for Schools

By Jordan Hale, Editor, School Signs Fast

A dugout banner plan for baseball and softball coaches, athletic directors, and booster clubs.

The dugout is the most photographed structure on a baseball or softball field. Players line the rail. Parents shoot from behind the backstop. Every walk-up, every celebration, every team photo has the dugout in it.

Yet on most school fields, the dugout is bare block and chain-link. A few hangable banners change that fast: the dugout reads like home, seniors get a spot of their own, and everything comes down at the end of the season to go back up next spring.

Everything here is hangable vinyl and mesh banners, the kind you tie on with grommets and take down yourself.

Know your dugout

School dugouts come in a few common builds. The build decides where banners can hang.

  • Chain-link front with a block back wall: banners tie to the fence on the outside and hang on the back wall inside
  • Fully fenced dugout: chain-link on several sides; banners tie on where they don't block the view of the field
  • Covered dugout with a roof edge: a banner can hang along the roof face if the structure allows it
  • Bench area with only a fence: common on softball and JV fields; treat it like a short fence run

Walk both dugouts, home and visitor, and photograph each face. Measure every section you might cover before you design anything.

Where dugout banners hang

The outside of the front fence

This is the face parents and fans see. It's the best spot for team identity.

  • "Home of the Grizzlies Baseball" or "Grizzlies Softball"
  • Logo, school colors, few words
  • Mesh fence banners, since the fence is open and catches wind

Hang it low enough that it doesn't sit in the players' line of sight from the bench. Check the view from inside the dugout, seated and standing, before you tie it off.

The back wall inside the dugout

The back wall is sheltered and faces the field. It shows up in every photo taken toward the dugout.

  • A team motto, program name, or league titles
  • School vinyl banners (13 oz), which suit sheltered walls and photo-heavy art
  • Facilities decides how banners mount on block or wood

The roof edge

A covered dugout's roof face is a natural spot for a long, narrow banner: team name, sport, maybe the field name. Facilities must confirm what the roof edge can hold and how the banner attaches.

The ends of the dugout

End fences facing the stands or the backstop work for smaller panels: "Home" and "Visitors," a senior panel, or the season's schedule.

Home and visitor dugouts

Label both dugouts clearly. Visiting teams, umpires, and families all use the signs.

  • "Home" and "Visitors" panels in the same size and style
  • School colors on the home side, a neutral version on the visitor side
  • The same placement on each dugout so the field looks balanced

Visitor-side banners should stay welcoming and neutral. Save the loud spirit for the home dugout.

Seniors on the dugout

Senior banners on the dugout fence give each senior a spot the team walks past every game.

  • One template: name, number, position, graduation year
  • One size for every senior
  • Hung in jersey order along the outside of the home dugout fence for the senior game or the whole final week

Plan the roster, photos, proofs, and hang order with the Senior Night planning guide. This post only covers where the set hangs on a dugout.

Sponsors near the dugout

Some programs place one or two sponsor panels on dugout end fences. Keep them separate from team identity so the dugout still reads as the team's space. The outfield fence usually carries the main sponsor row. For outfield fence and sponsor row ideas, see Baseball and Softball Banners and the School Sponsor Banners guide.

Keep the game first

Dugouts are working spaces. A few rules keep banners from getting in the way:

  • Don't block anyone's view of the field from the bench
  • Keep banners off protective screens and netting in front of the dugout
  • Nothing loose where a ball, bat, or player could catch it
  • Check your league and umpires' rules for anything hung in or on the dugout
  • Take banners down before severe weather

When in doubt, ask the head coach and facilities before hanging.

Rule of thumb: mesh wherever wind blows through the fence, vinyl wherever the wall is solid and sheltered. Don't cut wind slits in solid vinyl. Order mesh instead. More on materials: School Fence Banners: Sizes, Materials, and Design Guide.

Measure before you order

  • Measure each face you plan to cover, post to post or edge to edge
  • Order a banner a little smaller than the opening so there's room for grommets and ties
  • Note where fence posts, gates, and bench supports fall
  • Photograph each face with the tape measure in frame

Dugout fronts are often shorter than they look. A banner that fits the outfield fence can be far too tall for a dugout rail. Sizing help: What Size Banner Do I Need for My School?

Baseball and softball, one system

If the school has both programs, build one template with two sport lines. Same colors, same type, same layout. Each dugout gets its own set, and both fields look like one athletic department.

For a consistent color system, see Designing Consistent School Signage.

School scenarios

Bare block dugouts. A varsity baseball program hung one vinyl team banner on each back wall and a mesh "Home of" banner on the home dugout's front fence. Game photos changed overnight.

Softball field with a fence-only bench. The team treated the bench fence like a short fence run: one mesh team banner, plus "Home" and "Visitors" panels.

Covered dugout, long roof edge. Facilities confirmed the roof face could hold a banner and chose the mounting. The booster club ordered one long vinyl banner with the team name.

Senior week. Seniors' mesh panels hung in jersey order on the home dugout fence for the final home series, then went home with each senior.

Hang, take down, reuse

Use every grommet and keep banners snug, not over-tight. Ball bungees make spring setup and end-of-season takedown quick. Full steps: How to Hang School Fence Banners. Store banners dry and labeled by dugout and spot so next spring starts in minutes: How to Clean and Store School Banners.
