College Sports Banners: A Planning Guide for Athletic Departments
By Jordan Hale, Editor, School Signs FastShare
If you're an athletic director locking one look across a stadium fence, an arena wall and a recruiting visit, and your brand office still has to clear every logo, you need a banner plan that starts with licensing, not a random print order.
The short version: get logo approval first. Then order mesh for stadium and field fences, vinyl for arena and concourse walls, and a retractable stand for recruiting and camps. Add sponsor banners as partners sign. This guide works for universities, junior colleges and community colleges, and for the boosters and club teams that support them.
For athletic directors, sports information and marketing staff, facilities, and booster groups.
Ordering workflow, not a material catalog: This checklist focuses on campus approvals, measurements, proof routing, scheduling and the handoff to facilities. For a side-by-side explanation of products and installation locations, see our college athletic signs and banner materials guide.
Order this first
- Written logo approval from your brand or licensing office
- Stadium and field fences → Mesh banners
- Arena, gym and concourse walls → Vinyl banners (15 or 18 oz for long-term walls)
- Recruiting visits and camps → Retractable banner stand

Step 1: Clear logos before anything else
This is the step that sets college banners apart, and it's usually the slowest part of the timeline. University logos, wordmarks and mascots are trademarks. Most campuses run them through a brand guide and a licensing or trademark office.
- Athletic department orders: use official logo files, colors and fonts from your brand guide, and have communications or marketing sign off on the proof.
- Ask whether you need a licensed vendor. Many universities require items bearing their marks, even banners for internal use, to be produced by an officially licensed vendor or approved through their licensing program. Ask your licensing office what this order needs before you place it.
- Boosters, alumni groups, club teams and student organizations: get written permission from the licensing or brand office first. As our FAQ explains, college team logos belong to their owners, and we can't print them without permission.
- Sponsor banners: confirm the sponsor's logo use and any rules on pairing athletics marks with sponsors. Some schools restrict it.
- Shared venues: if the stadium or arena belongs to a city or another school, check what can hang and where.
Common mistake: ordering first and asking the brand office second. Approval often takes longer than printing, so start it in summer.
Step 2: Fences first (stadium and fields)
Football stadiums, baseball and softball outfields, soccer fields and track ovals have long runs of chain-link. That fence is the biggest canvas a college program owns. A row of mesh banners with the program name, mascot and conference titles turns it into a home venue. See how a full fence line comes together on our game day fence banners page.
Measure each panel post to post before you order. Our guide on how to measure a chain-link fence for school banners walks through it.
Step 3: Arena walls, concourses and gates
Inside, vinyl does the talking. Basketball, volleyball and wrestling programs use wall banners for conference titles, tournament appearances, program history and "Welcome to" messages. For a wall of titles and honorees, see hall of fame and retired number banners.
Fans form their first impression at the gate. A banner at the ticket window or concourse entrance tells visitors they're in the right place. Keep it short: program name, mascot, one line.
Step 4: Recruiting visits, camps and media days
Recruits notice details. A retractable banner stand with your logo works as a backdrop for official visits, summer camps, banquets and alumni weekends, then packs into its case for the next event. Retractables are built for indoor and sheltered spaces, not open wind. For photo walls, see media day and press backdrop banners.
Map the recruit's path before you order: parking, entrance, check-in, facility tour, locker room, training space, meeting area and photo spot. Put a sign wherever it either helps with navigation or shows off the program. At media days and press conferences, keep important logos high enough to stay visible behind athletes, tables and microphones.
Pro tip: keep recruiting graphics evergreen (program, logo, conference) and check with your compliance office before personalizing anything with a prospect's name.
Step 5: Sponsors and partners
Local businesses fund a lot of college athletics, from club teams to varsity. A sponsor banner on the outfield or stadium fence thanks them in front of every crowd. See school sponsor banners and athletic fence sponsor banner packages for tiers and a uniform sponsor row.
Run sponsors as a program, not one-off projects. Pick a few approved sizes, set logo and artwork requirements up front, and keep one layout so every sponsor gets the same presentation.
Step 6: Game-day wayfinding
Game-day signs have one job before all others: reduce confusion. Fans should find parking, gates, will call, concessions, hospitality and seating without stopping to ask.
- Walkways and check-in: A-frame signs move as crowd flow changes, so they suit ticketing, media check-in and hospitality directions.
- Parking lots and shuttle stops: yard signs mark temporary routes and overflow areas.
- Entrances and fan zones: a vinyl banner marks the student gate, donor hospitality or the media entrance.
Keep directions short and in large type. "MEDIA CHECK-IN →" works better than a sentence. For permanent building, accessibility, life-safety or code-required signs, follow your facilities standards and applicable regulations. Event graphics support official signage; they don't replace it.
Mesh or vinyl for college venues?
Choose mesh for fences and open, windy venues: air passes through, so the banner doesn't pull on the fence like a sail. Choose vinyl for walls, concourses and indoor spaces where you want solid, dense color.
Do not choose a college banner from an ounce-weight lifespan chart. Service life depends on the exact substrate construction, exposure, banner dimensions, finishing, installation, maintenance and weather. For exposed fence applications, evaluate mesh by its actual airflow/open-area specification and the supporting fence; for solid banners, compare the current material construction and intended application rather than assuming heavier automatically means better.
Materials: vinyl comes in 13 oz, 15 oz and 18 oz. Mesh is 8 oz mesh vinyl, a wind-permeable outdoor banner, printed one side, with grommets about every 24–36" around the edges. The current vinyl-banner checkout offers Hemmed and Grommets or Wind Slits, not pole pockets; check the live product options before ordering. Double-sided printing is 18 oz vinyl only. Banners are printed with UV-cured inks that resist fading, rain and scratching.
Standard banners print one-sided in full color, with finishing according to the current product specification; double-sided 18 oz vinyl is available at checkout. Choose attachment hardware and distribute load around the finished perimeter for the actual site; see how to hang school fence banners. Ties and bungees are not included.
How to size banners for big venues
College venues are bigger than most high school fields, so reading distance matters more. The farther away people read a banner, the bigger the letters need to be, so keep it to a few words and high contrast, and check a full-size mock-up from the upper seats.
- Stock sizes: 3' × 6', 3' × 8', 4' × 8', 5' × 10', 5' × 12', 5' × 15', and 5' × 20'
- Long fence runs: repeat one size so the fence looks planned, not patched
- Arena walls: measure usable wall and leave margin on every side
- Odd spaces: any custom size; email measurements for pricing
More on sizing: What Size Banner Do I Need?
Plan a full season
- Summer: measure fences and walls, collect logo approvals, lock one look across every sport.
- Preseason: order the evergreen/long-term pieces: fence banners, arena wall banners and a recruiting retractable.
- In season: add sponsor banners as partners sign, plus senior day and rivalry banners. See senior night banners.
- Postseason: order conference and tournament title banners once results are official.
Matching designs across football, basketball, baseball and the rest make the department look like one program. Standardize the basics: approved sizes, one material choice for indoor and one for outdoor, and repeatable templates for sponsor, recruiting and media-day graphics. Different coaches and event teams can then order signs that still look like the same university. Browse ideas on our school sports banners page, including football and basketball.
Artwork checklist
- Logos and large text: use vector files whenever possible so they scale cleanly.
- Photos: at least 100 PPI at full printed size.
- Bleed and edges: include .25" bleed on all sides, and keep logos and text away from hems, grommets and edges.
- Proofread: check every athlete name, sponsor name, date, URL, QR code and arrow. One wrong name turns a fast job into a reprint.

Frequently asked questions
Do you make college sports banners?
Yes. We print custom banners for colleges, universities, junior colleges and community colleges, as well as K-12 schools. Mesh for fences, vinyl for walls and indoor venues.
Can you print our university logo?
Yes, with permission. Athletic departments send official logo files. Boosters, alumni groups and student organizations need written approval from the licensing or brand office first. Ask whether your school also requires a licensed vendor.
What's the best banner for a college stadium fence?
Mesh. Air passes through it, which makes it the best choice for fences and high-wind areas. Use appropriately distributed perimeter attachment so it hangs flat. Ties and bungees are not included.
What sizes work for college stadiums and arenas?
Stock sizes run from 3' × 6' to 5' × 20'. The farther away people read a banner, the bigger the letters need to be. Custom sizes by email at sales@schoolsignsfast.com.
How fast can we get college banners?
Free Shipping on All Orders. Production begins after print-ready artwork approval. Confirm the delivery estimate when an event deadline matters. Build logo-approval time in ahead of that.
Is there a minimum order?
No. One banner for a single game is fine.
