Swim and Dive Meet Banner Guide for Schools

By Jordan Hale, Editor, School Signs Fast

A meet-day sign plan for swim and dive coaches, athletic directors, and booster clubs.

Swim and dive has a problem most sports don't: many school teams don't own their pool. They practice and host meets at a community center, a city natatorium, a college, or a neighboring district. The team moves in for the afternoon and moves out by evening.

So the best swim and dive signage is often a portable kit: pieces that set up in minutes, make a borrowed building feel like home, and pack into a bin afterward. Schools with their own natatorium can add permanent wall banners on top.

Plan both, zone by zone.

Start with Lobby retractable banners, the core of a portable pool kit.

Check first: The pool operator and meet officials set rules for the deck. Keep walkways, exits, starting blocks, lane lines, and the diving area clear, and confirm every sign location and mounting method with the facility before meet day.

Two kinds of pool: yours or borrowed

Your own natatorium. You can plan a permanent layer: a "Home of" wall banner, a records banner, and a championship wall. Facilities handles mounting. Add a portable layer for meet days.

A borrowed pool. You can't drill into anyone's wall. Build everything to set up and take down: retractable stands in the lobby, vinyl banners that tie to railings or fences where the host allows, and A-frames in dry areas. Nothing stays behind.

Most of the kit works for both.

Zone 1: Entrance and lobby

The lobby is where families decide whether this feels like your meet or someone else's building.

  • Retractable school banners at the entrance: team name, logo, and "Welcome to the Meet"
  • A second retractable at spectator check-in or the concession table
  • School A-frame signs at the parking-lot door if the natatorium has more than one entrance

Retractables are made for this: fast to set up, one floor-standing stand per spot, each with a travel case. Keep key text above the base and the headline in the top third, at eye level.

Zone 2: Pool deck and team areas

Home and visiting teams need clear areas on the deck, and parents need to know where they can't go.

  • School vinyl banner on the home-team area wall or railing: "Home of the Otters Swim & Dive"
  • Small vinyl panels or A-frames for "Home Team" and "Visiting Team" areas, placed in dry spots, never in walkways
  • "Athletes and Officials Only" at deck entrances, if the host allows

Pool decks are wet. Keep A-frames and stands out of walkways and away from splash, and ask the host where freestanding signs are allowed. If there's any doubt, mount the banner on a railing instead.

Zone 3: Bleachers and spectator wall

This is the view in every family photo and the backdrop for every video.

  • A wide school vinyl banner along the bleacher wall or railing facing the pool
  • A matching team-name banner across from it, if the host allows

Design for distance. The far side of a natatorium is a long way from the bleachers. Use big type, one logo, and few words.

Zone 4: Clerk and ready area

Swimmers report for heats all meet long, and new swimmers miss their heat more often than anyone.

  • A-frame at the clerk or ready area: "Clerk of Course" or "Check In Here" with a big arrow
  • A second A-frame on the path from the team area

Officials post heat sheets and run the ready area. Your sign just makes it easy to find.

Zone 5: Diving well

Diving often runs at a separate well or at one end of the pool, and families lose track of it.

  • A-frame or small vinyl panel at the spectator entry to the diving area: "Diving →"
  • One team banner on the wall behind the diving spectators, if allowed

Never place signs near the boards, the well edge, or anywhere in a diver's approach. The facility and diving officials decide what goes where.

Zone 6: Records and recognition

Records are part of swim culture. Your own pool deserves a records banner. If you borrow a pool, a records retractable in the lobby works too.

  • A vinyl records banner on the natatorium wall, reprinted when a record falls
  • A lobby retractable listing team records for home meets at a borrowed pool
  • Championship titles on a permanent wall at your own pool

Zone 7: Awards and photos

  • A retractable school banner behind the awards spot for podium photos
  • Or a vinyl backdrop on a lobby wall

Pool-friendly habits

Natatoriums are humid, and decks stay wet. A few habits help any kit:

  • Hang banners on railings or walls, not on the deck
  • Keep freestanding signs in the lobby or dry spots
  • Wipe banners dry before rolling them up after a meet
  • Store the kit somewhere dry between meets

School scenarios

Borrowed city natatorium. The team hosts six meets a season at a city pool. Two retractables in the lobby, one vinyl banner tied to the bleacher railing, and two A-frames for the clerk and diving turn the building into home for an afternoon. Everything fits in one bin.

New natatorium on campus. The school plans a permanent layer first: a "Home of" wall banner, a records banner, and room for titles. Meet-day retractables go in the lobby.

Diving gets lost. Families at a two-pool facility kept missing diving. One "Diving →" A-frame at the lobby split solved it.

Senior meet. The program hangs a matching senior set along the bleacher railing for the last home meet. Planning lives in the Senior Night planning guide.

Meet kit checklist

  3. Choose portable pieces for borrowed pools and permanent pieces for your own
  4. Keep reusable pieces undated
  5. Proof every file
  6. Pack the kit in one labeled bin
  7. Upload artwork

Only where the pool operator allows. Keep walkways, exits, blocks, lane lines, and the diving area clear, and keep freestanding signs away from splash.

What retractable should we get?

We offer one floor-standing model with a travel case. Keep key text above the base and the headline at eye level.

How do we show team records?

How do we store banners from a humid pool?

Wipe them dry, roll them, and store them somewhere dry between meets.
