Indoor and outdoor school signage materials for campus use

Indoor vs. Outdoor School Signage Materials: A Selection Guide

By Jordan Hale, Editor, School Signs Fast

The right sign depends on where it goes, how long it stays, and how far away people read it. We print six products. Here is where each one works best, indoors and out.

Outdoor Materials

13 oz Vinyl Banners

Our vinyl banners are printed in full color on 13 oz vinyl with reinforced hems and metal grommets. Use them on entrances, walls, railings, and stadium areas, indoors or out. Printing is one-sided, in seven stock sizes from 3' × 6' up to 5' × 20', or ask us about a custom size.

8 oz Mesh Banners

Mesh fence banners use breathable 8 oz mesh that lets air pass through, which helps reduce wind load on exposed chain-link fences. They're made for baseball outfields, stadium fencing, soccer complexes, and sponsor rows. Same size range as vinyl.

Corrugated Plastic Yard Signs

Yard signs are 18" × 24" corrugated plastic with step stakes included. They're light, easy to move, and right for graduation recognition, carline directions, parking, and fundraisers. Order packs of 8 to 48, one-sided or two-sided, and each sign can carry a different name and number.

Feather Flags

Feather flags stand 14' tall and 2.5' wide, so people see them from a distance. Use the ground spike for grass and lawns, or the X-base for sidewalks and other hard surfaces.

Indoor and Outdoor Materials

A-Frame Signs

A-frame signs work at entrances, walkways, parking areas, hallways, and events. Order a frame with two printed signs, or signs only when the message changes and you already own the frame.

Retractable Floor Stand

The retractable banner is a floor-standing stand with a travel case. Pull the graphic up for lobbies, front offices, registration tables, gyms, and banquets, then retract it into the base and carry it to the next event.

The feather flag's X-base also works on lobby and gym floors.

We don't print fabric, foam board, or wall graphics.

How Wind Changes Banner Choice

Solid vinyl can act like a sail on exposed fencing. Mesh lets air through and reduces that effect. It doesn't remove the need for secure mounting and regular checks.

Temporary vs. Long-Term Signs

A sign used for one weekend doesn't need the same setup as one that stays up all season. Keep evergreen messages on banners and A-frames, and put dated messages on yard signs or replacement A-frame signs.

What to Use Where

  • Entrance banner: 13 oz vinyl
  • Athletic fence: 8 oz mesh
  • Graduation or carline signs: corrugated plastic yard signs
  • Event entrance from the street: feather flags
  • Check-in and parking directions: A-frame signs
  • Lobby, registration, and banquets: retractable floor stand

Common Mistakes

  • Putting solid vinyl on a highly exposed fence without thinking about wind
  • Printing dates on signs that could be reused
  • Choosing a size before measuring the space
  • Ignoring how the sign will be mounted or placed

Questions to Ask Before Ordering

  • Will the sign be indoors or outdoors?
  • How long will it stay up?
  • How far away will people read it?
  • Will it hang on a fence or wall, go in the ground, or stand on the floor?
  • Will wind be a factor?
  • Does it need to be reused?
