Pep Rally Banner Ideas for High Schools: What to Hang and Where

By Jordan Hale, Editor, School Signs Fast

The best pep rally banners do three jobs: they tell the room whose gym it is, they give every class a place to cheer from, and they make the team's entrance feel like an event. For most high schools that means one big evergreen banner on the gym wall that faces the bleachers, a banner for each graduating class, and an entrance banner over the doors the team runs through. Add a schedule sign in the hallway and a stage piece if you have a podium.

This guide is the plan for the pep rally itself: what to hang first, where it goes in the gym, how to hang it safely, and how to reuse the same set for fall, winter, and spring rallies. If you're planning a full homecoming week, the homecoming and Spirit Week signage ideas post covers parades, dances, and parking. Ready to shop now? Start with our school banners page.

Pep rally banners to buy first

Buy in this order.

  1. Main gym wall banner. School name and mascot on the wall the bleachers face, behind where the team lines up. It shows up in every photo and video from the rally.
  2. Class banners. One per graduating class, hung above or in front of that class's bleacher section. These power the class-versus-class cheer-off.
  3. Team entrance banner. Mounted above the doors the athletes come through, so the introductions start under your colors.
  4. Hallway announcement banner. "Pep Rally Friday" in the main hallway or cafeteria, so students know it's coming.
  5. Stage or podium piece. A retractable banner stand beside the microphone, so the speaker isn't standing in front of a blank wall.
  6. Dated details. Opponent, date, and game time go on A-frame signs at the gym doors, not on the big banners.

Quick rule: if a banner has to come down after one rally, it's on the wrong material or carries the wrong words.

Where each pep rally banner goes

Walk the gym before you design anything. Stand where the students sit, where the band plays, and where the yearbook or livestream camera usually points. Hang your biggest pieces on the walls those people actually look at.

Spot What it does Starting size Best material
Main gym wall School identity for every rally and game 5' × 10' to 5' × 20' 15 or 18 oz vinyl
Class sections Gives each class a home base 3' × 6' or 3' × 8' 13 or 15 oz vinyl
Team entrance Marks the athletes' entry 3' × 8' or 4' × 8' Vinyl with grommets
Hallway or cafeteria Builds the countdown before the day 3' × 6' 13 oz vinyl
Stage or podium Backdrop for speakers and awards Retractable stand Stand graphic
Gym doors Opponent, date, game time A-frame panels A-frame signs

Stock banner sizes run from 3' × 6' to 5' × 20' on our custom vinyl banners page, and any custom size is available by email. There's no minimum, so one banner is fine. Still unsure on size? Measure the clear wall between doors, pads, and scoreboards, then use our guide to what size banner you need.

Pep rally banner ideas that work every time

1. The evergreen gym wall banner

School name, mascot, and a short line that never expires, like "Home of the Bears." Skip the year and the opponent. This is the banner that hangs all season, so pay for heavier vinyl here. What we recommend: match the colors and logo exactly to your other gym banners so the room looks like one system, not a pile of orders.

2. Class banners by graduation year

Print "Class of 2028," not "Sophomores." A graduation-year banner follows that class through every rally until they graduate, and the seniors' banner can come out again at commencement. Give each class the same layout in its own color so the cheer-off looks organized and fair.

3. The team entrance banner

Hang it above the doors or tunnel the athletes run through, with the mascot and one short line. Common mistake: ordering a vinyl banner for the team to break through. Vinyl banners have reinforced hems and corners, so they won't tear cleanly. Keep the run-through itself paper, and hang the vinyl banner above the doorway.

4. Sport-by-sport roster banners

Fall rallies spotlight football, volleyball, and cross country. Winter brings basketball, wrestling, and cheer. Instead of one crowded banner, give each program its own and swap them in by season. Sport ideas live on sports banners, football banners, basketball banners, and cheerleading and dance banners.

5. Hallway countdown

One banner where traffic peaks between classes: "Pep Rally Friday. Wear Navy." Change the details on an A-frame by the door instead of reprinting.

6. Playoff and send-off rallies

When a team makes a deep run, add one rotating playoff banner rather than reprinting the main wall. See playoff spirit banners for rotating rounds, and student section banner ideas for moving rally banners to the bleachers on game night.

What to put on a pep rally banner

  • One message per banner. School name and mascot, or a class year, or one rally line. Not all three.
  • Big type, few words. The back row of the bleachers should read it at a glance. The farther away people sit, the bigger the letters and the fewer the words.
  • High contrast. Light letters on your darkest school color, or the reverse. Gym lights wash out thin fonts and pale colors.
  • Official logo files. Use the school's own mascot artwork, and vector files when you have them.

Photo banners need images that hold up at full size: plan on at least 100 PPI at print size, add .25" bleed on big banners, and keep key text and logos well inside the edges, away from the grommets. Our guide on how to design a school banner walks through layout.

How to hang pep rally banners in the gym

  • Facilities first. Get a yes on each wall, rail, and ceiling spot before you order. Some districts and fire marshals also limit decorations in gyms, so ask. Our basketball banner ideas post covers the flame-resistance question.
  • Keep exits clear. Never cover exit signs, doors, fire alarms, extinguishers, or wall pads.
  • Walls. Use the hooks or anchors facilities approves. For block walls, see how to hang a banner on a brick or cinder block wall.
  • Ceilings. Leave rafter and cable hanging to facilities. Current vinyl-banner finishing choices are Hemmed and Grommets or Wind Slits; pole pockets are not listed at checkout.
  • Seen from both sides? A banner hung mid-gym can read from both directions. Standard vinyl and mesh banners print one-sided. Double-sided 18 oz vinyl is available at checkout.
  • Bring your own ties. Every banner has reinforced corners with internal polyester webbing and metal grommets. Ties and bungees are not included, so have them ready.

Holding the rally outside at the stadium? On an open fence, mesh banners let the wind pass through. The how to hang school fence banners guide covers the install.

Make one set of pep rally banners last all year

Most schools hold several rallies a year. Plan the set once:

  • Always up: main gym wall banner and class banners.
  • Swap by season: sport and roster banners.
  • Changes every rally: opponent, date, and theme on A-frames.

Roll banners for storage instead of folding them, and label each one by spot and season so next year's student council can find it. More storage tips are in our banner care and storage guide.

Pep rally banner checklist

  • Main wall, class, and entrance spots approved by facilities
  • Evergreen words on big banners; dates on A-frames
  • Class banners by graduation year, same layout, own colors
  • Artwork at 100 PPI or better at full size, with .25" bleed
  • Have facilities approve any ceiling attachment; choose double-sided 18 oz only when printing on both faces

Your next step

Pick your main wall, class, and entrance banners, then order custom vinyl banners in your school colors. Have artwork ready? Upload your artwork. Need a hand with the layout? Our design services can build it. You'll see a proof before anything prints.

Pep rally banner FAQs

What should a pep rally banner say?

Keep it to one message: your school name and mascot, a class year, or one short rally line like "Home of the Bears." Use big type, few words, and high-contrast school colors so the back row can read it. Put the opponent, date, and theme on A-frame signs so the banner works for every rally.

Can a vinyl banner be used as a run-through banner?

Not well. Run-through banners are made to tear, and vinyl banners have reinforced hems and corners, so they won't break cleanly. Use paper for the run-through and hang a vinyl entrance banner above the doors the team comes through.

Should class banners show the grade or the graduation year?

Use the graduation year, like "Class of 2028." A grade label is out of date next fall, but a graduation-year banner follows that class through every pep rally until they graduate. Give each class the same layout in its own color.

Can we hang banners on the gym bleachers for a pep rally?

Often, if facilities approves. Tie through the grommets on a fixed rail and keep aisles, exits, and steps clear. Don't attach banners to bleachers that fold or roll back, since moving them can damage the banner or catch in the mechanism. Ties and bungees are not included.

Can we hang a pep rally banner from the gym ceiling?

It can be done when facilities handles the install. Current vinyl-banner finishing choices are Hemmed and Grommets or Wind Slits; pole pockets are not listed at checkout. If people will see it from both sides, choose double-sided 18 oz vinyl at checkout.

Do we need new pep rally banners every sport season?

No. Keep the main gym wall and class banners up all year, swap sport and roster banners by season, and change opponents and dates on A-frames. One planned set covers fall, winter, and spring rallies.

Can students design our pep rally banners?

Yes. Student council or an art class can build the design, then upload the artwork using official school logo files. Every order gets a proof before print, so the school can sign off first. If you'd rather hand it off, use our design services.

An undated pep-rally backdrop may be reusable for assemblies and games. The athletic department signage checklist helps identify which signs can serve more than one event.
