Robotics Team Banners for Competitions and School Display
By Jordan Hale, Editor, School Signs FastShare
A robotics pit is a workshop, a lab, and a team's front door, all in one small space. Judges walk by. Other teams scout. Families look for your team number among all the others. A banner tells them where you are and who you are in one glance.
Back at school, the same team deserves a spot on the wall next to every varsity sport. Here is how to brand the pit, recognize sponsors, and bring the banner home.

Start with your event's pit rules
Every competition sets its own rules for pit displays: what can hang, how high, what can stand in the aisle, and what's off-limits for safety. Those rules change from event to event and season to season.
Before you order anything:
- Read the current rules for every event on your schedule.
- Note the pit size and any limits on height or overhanging displays.
- Check what can attach to the pit's back wall, pipe, or table, if anything.
- Plan for the smallest pit you expect. A banner that fits there fits everywhere.
Then match your banner to what the rules allow.
The pit banner
The pit banner is your team's sign. It hangs at the back of the pit or across the front of the work table, where anyone walking the aisle can read it.
What to put on it:
- Team number. The biggest thing on the banner. It's how people find you.
- Team name and school. Right below the number.
- Mascot or team logo. Your own artwork.
- Sponsors. On a separate strip or a second banner, not crowded around the number.
Size. Pick the stock size that fits your pit and the rules: 3ft x 6ft, 3ft x 8ft, or 4ft x 8ft are the sizes to check against a pit back wall or table front. For a larger team area or a hallway, 5ft x 10ft and up.
Hang. Vinyl banners have reinforced hems and metal grommets standard. Our FAQ recommends bungee cords over rigid ties, with grommets (about 3/8" holes) in all four corners and about every 24–36 inches around the edge. Pole pockets are available on request, ask us. We don't sell poles, brackets, or frames.
Your marks only. Use your team's own name, number, and artwork. Don't use a competition program's name or logo as if your team is affiliated, unless the program's own rules allow it.

Retractable stand or grommeted vinyl?
A pit changes every event. Your display has to adapt.
Retractable stand. One floor stand that pulls up from its base and packs into its travel case. It needs nothing to hang from, which makes it the safe pick when you don't know what the next pit offers. Stand it at the back corner of the pit or beside the table, if the rules allow a freestanding display.
Grommeted vinyl. Wider and bolder, and it rolls up tight for travel. It needs something to tie to: a pipe, a railing, a table edge, or a back wall the event allows you to use.
You can use both. The retractable goes to every event. The vinyl banner goes up where there's a place to hang it, and lives in the school hallway the rest of the time.
Shop the Retractable banner stand. For more on retractables, see our retractable banners guide.
Recognize sponsors without the clutter
Sponsors keep teams running, and they want to be seen. The trick is giving them space without burying your team number.
- Separate them. Put sponsors on their own banner or on a strip below the team banner.
- One logo size. Every sponsor at the same size keeps it fair and clean. Group them if you have tiers.
- Get the files. Ask each sponsor for their logo file and permission to use it.
- Plan for changes. Sponsors change from season to season. A separate sponsor banner can be reprinted without touching the team banner.
A 3ft x 8ft or 4ft x 8ft sponsor banner fits below a team banner or on the side of the pit.
The hallway display between competitions
The team spends months building. Show it off at school.
- Hallway banner: the same team banner from the pit, hung outside the robotics room or in the main hall.
- Awards and seasons: a banner in one matching size listing awards and seasons, the same way athletic teams hang championships.
- Retractable at open house: set it up with the robot at open house, a club fair, or a sponsor night.
When the pit banner does double duty in the hallway, it earns its keep all year.
Which banner goes where
| Spot | Product | Sizes sold | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pit back wall or table front | School vinyl banner | 3ft x 6ft, 3ft x 8ft, or 4ft x 8ft (check event rules) | Team number, name, school |
| Pit corner, any venue | Retractable banner stand | One floor stand with travel case | Team identity |
| Below the team banner | School vinyl banner | 3ft x 8ft or 4ft x 8ft | Sponsors, one logo size |
| School hallway | School vinyl banner | 4ft x 8ft to 5ft x 12ft | Team banner and awards |
| Open house or club fair | Retractable or A-frame | One floor stand; A-frame with 2 signs | Team welcome and details |
Vinyl banners come in 3ft x 6ft, 3ft x 8ft, 4ft x 8ft, 5ft x 10ft, 5ft x 12ft, 5ft x 15ft, and 5ft x 20ft, printed full color on one side. No minimum on banners.
An A-frame for demos and school events
When the team demos the robot at a school event, an A-frame at the door does the talking: "Robotics Demo Inside," the room number, and the time. A-frames come as the frame with 2 signs, or as 2 signs only, so you keep the frame and swap panels for each event.

Pack and store between tournaments
Your banners travel as much as the robot does. Treat them like gear.
- Roll vinyl print side out around a tube. Never fold it.
- Pack the retractable in its travel case, and keep the case with the pit kit.
- Bring bungees and zip ties in a labeled bag with the banners.
- Check it after every event. Wipe it down, let it dry, and look at every grommet before it goes back in the bin.
- Assign an owner. One team member packs and unpacks the display at every event. Put it on the pit checklist next to batteries and tools, so it never gets left behind at a venue.
Design for a busy aisle
Pits are crowded, loud, and bright. Design for a fast read.
- Team number first, in the largest type on the banner.
- High contrast. Dark on light or light on dark.
- Few words. Number, name, school. That's it.
- Size for the aisle. Our FAQ suggests about 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance.

Frequently asked questions
What banners does a school robotics team need at competitions?
A pit banner with the team number, name, and school, a retractable floor stand that works in any pit, and a separate sponsor banner.
What size banner works for a robotics pit?
It depends on your event's pit rules, so check them first. Our sizes start at 3ft x 6ft, and 3ft x 6ft, 3ft x 8ft, and 4ft x 8ft are the ones to check against a pit wall or table front.
Retractable stand or grommeted vinyl?
A retractable stand works anywhere freestanding displays are allowed, because it needs nothing to hang from. Grommeted vinyl is bigger and bolder when there's a place to tie it. You can use both.
How do we recognize sponsors without cluttering the banner?
Put sponsors on their own banner or strip, with every logo at the same size, and keep the team number on the main banner.
Can the pit banner hang in the school hallway?
Yes. Hang it outside the robotics room between events, and add an awards banner in a matching size.
How fast can we get a banner before a competition?
Same-Day Production. Free 3-Day Shipping. Order a few weeks before your first event so there's time to check pit rules and proof the team number.
