Gymnastics and Bowling Banners for High Schools
By Jordan Hale, Editor, School Signs FastShare
Two winter sports. Two very different venues. Gymnastics owns the home gym for a night: beam, bars, floor, and a wall behind every routine. Bowling may compete in a building the school doesn't own, with lanes, a scoreboard, and nowhere to hang anything permanent.
Both teams deserve to look like a varsity program. Here is how to do it with banners built for each venue.

Gymnastics: the home meet wall
Every routine at a home meet happens in front of a wall. Put your team on it.
Team banner. School name, mascot, and "Gymnastics." Hang it on the wall behind the floor exercise or across from the judges' table, where it sits behind routines and shows up in photos.
Size. For a wall behind the floor, 5ft x 10ft or 5ft x 12ft. For a long end wall, 5ft x 15ft or 5ft x 20ft. Measure the wall and check around clocks, scoreboards, and existing banners first.
Clearance. Keep banners well clear of the equipment and the landing areas. Nothing loose, nothing hanging where a gymnast or coach moves. Your coach and facilities team make the final call on placement.
Hang. Vinyl banners have reinforced hems and metal grommets standard. Pole pockets are available on request, ask us. We don't sell poles, brackets, or frames. Our FAQ recommends grommets (about 3/8" holes) in all four corners and about every 24–36 inches around the edge.

Gymnastics: one banner for every senior
Banners start at 3ft x 6ft. For a gymnastics team, that makes a group banner the smart move.
The senior group banner. Every senior on one banner: name, photo, and events for each. A 5ft x 10ft or 5ft x 12ft banner holds a handful of seniors with room to breathe. A bigger class can go to 5ft x 15ft.
Layout. Same photo crop, same type size, same order of information for every senior. Alphabetical keeps it fair.
After senior night. Hang it in the gym for the rest of the season, then in the team room.
For senior night planning, from the walk to the ceremony, see our senior night banners planning guide and our senior night banners page.
Gymnastics: roster and records
Once the team banner is up, two more pieces round out the gym:
- Roster banner. Season, coaches, and every athlete's name. 4ft x 8ft or 5ft x 10ft reads well from the bleachers.
- Records or honors banner. Team records, all-conference or state qualifiers by year, in one matching size. For long-term recognition, see hall of fame and retired number banners.
Keep the roster banner free of the year if you want it to last. Or print a new one each season as a keepsake.
Bowling: banners for a venue you don't own
If your team bowls at a commercial alley, you can't leave anything on the wall. So bring the team identity with you, set it up before the match, and pack it out after.
Ask first. Talk to the alley's manager before match day. Ask where a team banner can stand or hang, and what's off-limits. Some venues may say yes to a banner on a railing behind your lanes. Others may allow only a freestanding display.
The retractable stand. The easiest answer. One floor stand that pulls up from its base and packs into its travel case. It needs no wall, no hooks, and no permission to drill. Set it behind your lanes or at the team's area.
A portable vinyl banner. Where the venue allows it, a 3ft x 6ft or 3ft x 8ft vinyl banner ties to a railing with bungee cords through the grommets. Roll it, pack it, and hang it again at the next match.

Shop the Retractable banner stand.
Bowling: at school
The team may not compete at school, but it belongs there. A team banner in the gym or hallway puts bowling next to every other varsity sport.
- Team banner: school name, mascot, "Bowling," and the season. 4ft x 8ft or 5ft x 10ft.
- Senior group banner: every senior on one banner, the same way gymnastics does it.
- Honors: a records or qualifiers banner in the same size as the other sports' banners, so the wall reads as one program.
Vinyl or retractable for a traveling team?
Retractable wins when the venue changes and you can't hang anything. It stands anywhere, sets up fast, and travels in its case.
Vinyl wins when there's a railing, fence, or wall you're allowed to use, and when you want size. It rolls up for travel and hangs with bungees.
You may not need to choose. A retractable for the alley and a vinyl team banner for the school gym cover both.

| Bowling: at school | School vinyl banner | 4ft x 8ft or 5ft x 10ft | Team banner and seniors |
Vinyl banners come in 3ft x 6ft, 3ft x 8ft, 4ft x 8ft, 5ft x 10ft, 5ft x 12ft, 5ft x 15ft, and 5ft x 20ft, printed full color on one side. No minimum on banners.
What to put on a team banner
Keep it bold and simple:
- School name and mascot. The biggest thing on the banner.
- Sport name. "Gymnastics" or "Bowling."
- One more line, at most. A season, a motto, or "Home of the" plus your mascot name.
- Roster names only on a roster banner, not the team banner.
Our FAQ suggests about 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance, so a banner read from 50 feet away needs letters about 5 inches tall.
Photos that print sharp
Senior and roster banners live or die on the photos.
- Use the original file. A photo pulled from social media or a group text is compressed. Ask the photographer or the family for the original.
- Match the crops. Same framing for every athlete: head and shoulders, same background if you can.
- Check the proof at full size. Zoom in on every face before you approve.
- Get permission. Confirm each family is fine with the photo and name on a public banner.

Frequently asked questions
What banners does a gymnastics team need for home meets?
A team banner on the wall behind the floor, a senior group banner, and a roster or records banner. Keep every banner clear of equipment and landing areas.
How do we fit every senior on one banner?
Use a group banner. A 5ft x 10ft or 5ft x 12ft banner fits a handful of seniors with a photo, name, and events for each. Go to 5ft x 15ft for a bigger class.
What size banner fits a gym wall behind the floor or beam?
5ft x 10ft or 5ft x 12ft, or up to 5ft x 20ft for a long wall. Measure first. Banners start at 3ft x 6ft.
How can a bowling team show a banner at an alley it doesn't own?
Ask the manager first. A retractable floor stand needs no wall, and a vinyl banner can tie to a railing with bungees where the venue allows it.
What should a team banner include?
The school name, the mascot, and the sport, plus one short line at most. Save the roster for its own banner.
How fast can we get team banners?
Same-Day Production. Free 3-Day Shipping. Order three to four weeks before the first meet so there's time to proof names and photos.
