Food Drive, Coat Drive and Toy Drive Banners for Schools

By Jordan Hale, Editor, School Signs Fast

A donation drive lives or dies on three things: families know it's happening, they know what to bring, and they know where to drop it. Signs handle all three.

A street-facing banner announces the drive. Yard signs in the carline remind families every morning. An A-frame marks the drop-off spot so donations land in the right bin. Whether it's canned food, winter coats, or toys, the setup is the same.

What the signs need to say

Every drive sign answers one of four questions:

  1. What? Food, coats, toys, or all three.
  2. When? The start and end dates.
  3. What to bring? A short accepted-items list.
  4. Where? The drop-off spot.

Don't put all four on every sign. Split them. The banner says what and when. The A-frame says where and what to bring. The yard signs repeat the headline.

The street-facing banner

This is the announcement. Hung on the front fence or the building, it tells every driver, parent, and neighbor the drive is on.

  • Size: 4ft x 8ft for a fence section by the entrance. 5ft x 10ft to 5ft x 15ft for a long fence or the front of the building.
  • Message: "Canned Food Drive," "Coat Drive," or "Toy Drive," plus the dates and your school name. Big letters. Nothing else.
  • Readability: Our FAQ suggests about 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance. A banner read from the road at 80 feet needs letters about 8 inches tall.
  • Hang: metal grommets and bungee cords, with grommets (about 3/8" holes) in all four corners and about every 24–36 inches around the edge.

Vinyl banners print in full color on one side, with reinforced hems and metal grommets standard. If the banner goes on an open chain-link fence in a windy spot, mesh lets air pass through.

One banner for every drive

Food in November. Coats when it turns cold. Toys in December. Three drives, three banners? Not necessarily.

Print one evergreen banner: "Donation Drive" or "Our School Gives Back," with your school name and mascot, no dates, no item type. Then let the A-frame carry the details. Swap the panel for each drive: "Canned Food This Week," "Coats Through Friday," "New Toys Here."

One banner. A few A-frame panels. Every drive covered.

The drop-off A-frame

Donations need a destination. An A-frame at the drop-off point turns "Where do I put this?" into a clear answer.

  • Where: beside the bins in the front office, at the gym doors, or at the carline curb for drive-up drop-off.
  • What it says: "Drop Donations Here," the accepted-items list, and the end date.
  • Options: the frame with 2 signs, or 2 signs only. Keep the frame. Order new panels for each drive.

A-frames stand on their own, with no stakes and no walls, so they work on tile floors and sidewalks alike.

Carline yard signs

The carline is where parents see the same stretch of lawn every day. Yard signs there turn the drive into a daily reminder.

  • Spec: 18" x 24" corrugated plastic, full color, one-sided or two-sided, with step stakes included.
  • Packs: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, or 48, and each sign can carry a different name and number.
  • Plan: one design, such as "Food Drive: Bring a Can," staked every few car lengths along the line.

A generic headline, with no dates, lets the same pack come back for the next drive. For carline placement tips, see carline and pickup signage.

Coat drives and toy drives: what changes

The kit stays the same. The details shift.

Coat drives. Families need to know sizes and condition. Put "Clean, gently used coats, all sizes" on the A-frame. Bulky donations need a bigger drop-off, so set the A-frame next to a rack or a large bin by the front door, not in a narrow hallway. If kids' coats are the priority, say so in large type.

Toy drives. Say "new, unwrapped toys" if that is your rule, and name the age range you're collecting for. If your toy drive runs up to winter break, hang the street banner early and keep the carline yard signs up until the last day.

Food drives. Name the items you want most. "Canned vegetables, peanut butter, pasta" gives families a shopping list. Put it on the A-frame and in the family newsletter so both say the same thing.

For every drive, pick one person to own the signs: hang them, swap the panels, and take them down on the last day.

Show progress and class competition

A class-versus-class challenge gives students a reason to bring one more can. Signs can make the race visible.

  • Leaderboard banner: print the class or grade names with open space beside each. Mark progress with tape, cut-out markers, or magnets on a nearby board.
  • Weekly A-frame panel: "Leading This Week: 4th Grade." Order a new panel when the lead changes, or keep a final "Thank You" panel for the last day.
  • Goal line: state a goal in cans, coats, or toys on the lobby retractable stand, and announce the count at the end.

Keep dollar goals out of it. This is a goods drive. For money-raising ideas, see fundraising banner ideas.

Wording that works

  • Lead with the item. "Canned Food Drive" beats "Help Our Community."
  • Short list. Three to five accepted items on the A-frame. More goes on the flyer.
  • One date range. "Nov. 3 to 14" is clearer than a list of days.
  • Thank the families. A final "Thank You" panel on the A-frame closes the drive well.
  • Your marks only. Use your school name, colors, and mascot. Leave off the names and logos of food banks and charities unless they have given permission.

Timeline for a November or December drive

  1. Four weeks out: Pick the drive, the dates, the drop-off spot, and the accepted items.
  2. Three weeks out: Upload artwork and approve proofs.
  3. One week out: Hang the street banner so families see it before the start.
  4. Start day: Set the A-frame at the drop-off and stake the carline yard signs.
  5. Last day: Swap in the "Thank You" panel. Then pull everything and store it for the next drive.

After the drive

Take the signs down the day the drive ends. A drive banner left up for weeks tells families the school missed a step. Roll the banner print side out, fold the A-frame, and stack the yard signs in one labeled bin with the spare panels. Next drive, it's all in one place.

Frequently asked questions

What should a school food drive banner say?

The drive name, the dates, and your school name, in big letters. Put the accepted-items list and the drop-off spot on an A-frame at the bins.

Where should drive signs go?

The banner on the front fence or building, yard signs along the carline, and an A-frame at the drop-off point in the office, at the gym doors, or at the curb.

What size banner works for a school entrance or fence?

4ft x 8ft fits a fence section by the entrance. 5ft x 10ft to 5ft x 15ft reads from the road on a long fence or building front.

Can one banner cover food, coat, and toy drives?

Yes. Print an evergreen "Donation Drive" banner with no dates or item type, then swap A-frame panels for each drive.

How do we show class-versus-class progress?

Print a leaderboard banner with class names and open space for markers, or order a new A-frame panel each week with the current leader.

How fast can we get drive signs?

Same-Day Production / Free 3-Day Shipping. Order about three weeks before the drive starts so there's time to approve proofs and hang the banner early.
