Back-to-school banner welcoming students and families

Back-to-School Banner Strategies That Welcome Families

By Jordan Hale, Editor, School Signs Fast

Back-to-school signage sets the tone before students and families ever walk through the door. The strongest welcome banners are easy to read, placed where traffic is highest, and designed around how families actually arrive on campus.

Plan Before Staff Return

Sign projects go smoother when artwork, sizes, and installation spots are settled before the first-week rush. A useful planning rhythm is:

  • 6–8 weeks before: walk campus, identify sign locations, and gather logos.
  • 4–6 weeks before: choose sizes, materials, and the main visual system.
  • 2–4 weeks before: finalize artwork and review the proof.
  • Before opening week: install and check every sign from a driver’s and walker’s point of view.

Plan early anyway. It gives your team time to measure, proof, and place everything correctly.

Use a Clear Welcome Message

  • Welcome Back
  • Welcome to Central High School
  • We’re Glad You’re Here
  • Go Tigers
  • First Day Starts Here

Choose a message families can understand in a second or two.

Design for Moving Traffic

Carline and entrance banners need large lettering, strong contrast, and fewer words. Detailed schedules belong on a webpage or handout, not on a banner viewed from a car.

  • Keep the headline short.
  • Use strong contrast.
  • Keep the mascot or logo from competing with the message.
  • Choose the largest size the location comfortably supports.

Choose the Right Placement

  • Main entrance fence
  • Drop-off approach
  • Front walkway
  • Parking lot entrance
  • Gym or cafeteria entrance
  • Registration and check-in area

Walk the route from the street to the classroom door. Add a sign anywhere a first-time visitor might hesitate.

Which Sign for Which Job?

Use Multiple Signs to Create a Route

One large welcome banner establishes the event. Smaller A-frames and yard signs then guide families toward parking, registration, and classrooms. Think of it as a trail: one strong welcome, then clear directional signs all the way to the door.

Design for Reuse

If the sign does not need a date, leave it off. “Welcome Back” works every August. “Welcome Back 2026–27” works once. Put changing details on smaller, replaceable signs whenever possible.

Keep the School Brand Consistent

Use official colors, mascot graphics, and logos so the entire sign system feels connected. See Designing Consistent School Signage.

Choose Material Based on Location

Solid vinyl works well for many entrance and building-mounted banners. For exposed fence locations, mesh may be the better fit because it allows airflow through the material. See our School Fence Banners guide.

Make Sure the Artwork Is Ready

Logos pulled from websites often print soft at banner size. Ask for the original logo files whenever possible, ideally a print-ready PDF or vector file. Our print-ready artwork guide covers the basics.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should we order back-to-school banners?

What size banner works for a school entrance?

Start with 3' × 6' (our smallest stock size) or 4' × 8', and let viewing distance and available space drive the decision. See our banner sizing guide.
